Don't You Change

Don't You Change used to sound nothing like it does. I was jamming this thing on my front steps with Bram in the summer of 2015 thinking back to when I first wrote it. It was heavily inspired by something Anthony Keidis would write. Very 'This velvet glove' or 'porcelain' at first. After a year or so it kind of turned into this 50s sounding groove. I remember jamming it with the drummer from my high school band one time. It was so simple and he nailed it. I knew it wasn't difficult, in fact it was probably boring for him but I remember being so happy to hear it come alive with drums. I had played it for Chris a few times and it turned out to be another one of mine he took a liking to. While we were out east during the summer of 2014 he asked me to play it almost every day we were in PEI. I wouldn't have cared about it really if he hadn't had taking a liking to it. To me it really wasn't anything special at all. When we started playing it as a band things really changed, for the better. Chris wrote these beautiful guitar lines that just pull you along and draw you closer in. Mike spiced up the percussion a considerable amount, keeping it simple but giving it character. Bram once again came up with this simple, fat sounding, slow-walking bass line that carries the song so well. We talked about cutting the intro guitar lick because it made the song kind of long but everyone decided it was a nice touch so we kept it. I think it's one of my best guitar riffs on the album and I say that because I'm really not that great when it comes to guitar. We ended up making the ending into this 'never-ending' jam much like 'Sir Psycho Sexy'. I was happy the song still had some Chili Peppers influence in it because they had been a huge part of my musical development. The song itself is about finding someone that loves you for who you are and isn't looking to change you. I remember I felt like I wanted to cry sometimes thinking about the idea - so I wrote Don't You Change.
